Rests
Music is composed not only of sound but also of silence. In notation, the silences are referred to as rests, and they have rhythmic values just like notes.

Whole Rests and Half Rests:
If you have trouble recognizing the difference between a whole rest and a half rest, consider this: a whole rest is "heavier" (lasts longer), so it hangs from the line, while a half rest is "lighter", so it sits on top of the line.
Rests can take dots just like notes; as with notes, a dot will increase the duration of a rest by half its value.
