Rhythm

Rhythm refers to the relative duration of a note, and its placement in time within the composition.

While pitch is represented on the written page in terms of its vertical position on the staff, rhythm is represented on the written page in terms of its horizontal position on the staff, and also by the way the note is drawn.

But first, in order to talk about the duration of a note, we must begin with a system for measuring time.
