Dawn

1989

Pallor of a gray dawn
clouds hanging heavy in the air
The still silence settles
patiently o'er the earth
A chilled breath, imperceptible,
moves wishes through the trees
while leaves whisper forgotten myths
serenading the blackbird

Spirit of a forgotten world
lift your eyes unto the sun
Arms outstretched, meet hope with hope
and raise your heart to greet the dawn

Spirit of an age gone by
spread your soul across the land
Embrace the earth and fill the sky
Cause the world to understand
the wholeness that is you

Beneath whispering trees
rooted deeply in imagination
a quiet green audience listens
nodding assent
to a mystery unspoken

And dreams reach into the silence
stirring every shadow
Spiders listen
and every cobweb lifts an ear
a lonely lilac sheds a tear

Spirit of an age gone by
pour your love upon the world
With gentle fingers lift me high
and teach this tender heart
    to fly

Men stumble over the truth from time to time,
but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened.
