Koenscherzo
1996

I wrote this piece for a college friend of mine who played the piano and enjoyed what he described as "flashy-bangy pieces".
"Scherzo" literally means "joke". As is common with scherzos, this is written in a rounded binary form. It has an A section, in B minor, which is repeated. It modulates to the relative major for the B section, which then returns to A, and then the whole B-A section is repeated.
I pray thee, cease thy counsel,
Which falls into mine ears as profitless
As water in a sieve: give not me counsel;
Nor let no comforter delight mine ear
But such a one whose wrongs do suit with mine.
Which falls into mine ears as profitless
As water in a sieve: give not me counsel;
Nor let no comforter delight mine ear
But such a one whose wrongs do suit with mine.
