Shadowland

2005

The warrior Hakuryuu has been wounded in battle.  Close to death, her spirit leaves her body and travels into the shadowland.  This is the chronicle of her journey.

The scene opens at dawn.  The wind is blowing; Hakuryuu's spirit stands on a mountainside, overlooking a valley.  She turns, places one hand on the rock wall behind her, and enters the mountain.  Thus begins her journey into the darkness, down twisting paths, past jagged rocks and underground streams.  The way grows steep, and she falls, sliding downward amid loose rock and sand.  When she comes to rest, she finds herself in a vast chamber, where voices call to her...

Hakuryuu, Hakuryuu,
mors prope circumvolitat;
Hakuryuu, Hakuryuu,
quem amas tuus oculus non jam vidēbit.

Semitae obscūrae praejacent,
semitae obscūrae et periculōsae;
sed memoriā tenē, Hakuryuu, memoriā tenē:
amor numquam deficit.

Semitae obscūrae praejacent,
semitae obscūrae et periculōsae
(desperatio est tuus maximus inimīcus);
memoriā tenē, Hakuryuu, memoriā tenē:
amor numquam deficit.

Amor numquam deficit,
(tenē, tenē, tenē)
amor numquam deficit.

Hakuryuu, Hakuryuu,
death hovers near;
Hakuryuu, Hakuryuu,
whom you love your eye shall see no more.

Dark paths lie ahead,
dark paths and dangerous;
but remember, Hakuryuu, remember:
love never fails.

Dark paths lie ahead,
dark paths and dangerous
(despair is your greatest enemy);
remember, Hakuryuu, remember:
love never fails.

Love never fails,
(hold on, hold on, hold on)
love never fails.

There can be no praying, in its richest implication and truest sense, where the will is not wholly and fully surrendered to God.
