A Prayer for Grace in Suffering
Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Lord, grant me the
Grace,
Humility,
Patience, and
Courage,
to accept and endure whatever suffering you may permit in my life,
knowing that nothing you permit me to suffer
can exceed what you have already suffered on the cross on my behalf, for
“Christ our Lord that way hath trod;”
believing that you will use it for my good and for your glory;
confident that it is merely for a season;
and even if it should be the season that concludes my mortal life on earth,
you have promised me an eternity in your glorious presence, where
“There shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying, nor pain,
for the old order of things has passed away.”
There is no use saying you choose to lie down when it has become impossible to stand up. That will not be the time for choosing: it will be the time when we discover which side we really have chosen, whether we realised it before or not. Now, today, this moment, is our chance to choose the right side. God is holding back to give us that chance. It will not last for ever. We must take it or leave it.
