Do We Really Need a Savior?
Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”— Luke 2:10-11
But why do we need a Savior?
We live in a society that denies or ignores God’s holiness, righteousness, and justice. If God were holy, righteous, and just, then sin would be a problem. But our society tends to deny, dismiss, and minimize sin. We live in a world of moral relativism, in which every person is allowed to define his or her own moral standard. This is applealing to many because it gives people license to do whatever they please and call it good, avoiding any issues of conscience. But the truth is, there are moral absolutes. And moral absolutes exist precisely because God is holy, righteous and just.
The Bible clearly tells us that no person is without sin. A simple look around you should confirm that fact. The problem is, sin separates us from God, and it leads to death. We are eternal beings, and we will not be uncreated when our bodies die; the Scripture tells us that after we die, we will face judgment. The real question has to do with where we will spend eternity. Will we spend it with God, or will we be forever separated from Him and everything that is good?
Sin is a problem, and it must be addressed. The good news is that God has provided a way for us to receive forgiveness for our sins. He sent Jesus, His only Son, to take the punishment for our sins so that we might have life. That punishment was nothing less than death on a cross. But by faith in Jesus, we can receive pardon for our sins, and be raised with Him to new life.
These are tidings of great joy, and they are available to all people! “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” If you have not yet trusted Jesus for your salvation, please do so today, that you might also have the gift of eternal life!
