By Way of Analogy
Suppose you were a private in the army. It's wartime, and you need to cross hostile enemy territory to get to the base and rendezvous with the other troops that have been deployed. Your commanding officer has over 12 years of experience in this type of combat situation. He is intimately familiar with the territory that you need to cross, and he has detailed intelligence data on the enemy's forces, locations, and plans. Now, you could decide, as a private, not only to accept his rightful authority over you, but also to trust his knowledge, skill, and experience, and let him lead you through to your objective. Or, you could decide that you'd rather go it alone.
The only right relationship between man and God is for man to acknowledge and yield to God's rightful authority over his life. Yet God isn't some authoritarian dictator. He created us and loves us deeply and wants the very best for our lives. Furthermore, being omniscient and transcendent of time and space, He knows what's best for us and what the future holds. And if that weren't enough, He knows the territory we need to traverse, because He's been there Himself.
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin.Hebrews 4:15
He is not only rightfully God and Lord of our lives — He is also completely worthy of our trust.
without trust, there can be no friendship.
