Chainmail

I've always liked the look of the 12th-century knight in chainmail, so I made this coif. If I recall correctly, those are 16-gauge steel links. It was fun to make; it's a lot like knitting. The thing weighs about 6 pounds.

Making chainmail is actually called knitting. Maybe the origin of the name has something to do with knights...?
In any case, such a mail coif would almost certainly have been worn with a tightly fitted arming cap (padded fabric cap, often tied under the chin) underneath, to stop the rings from piercing the skin if hit. Pulling bits of metal out of one's head is never a good thing.

I adore chainmail, the artistry of it is exquisite! I helped a friend of mine make some chainmail belt favors a few years back. By the end of it my forearms looked like Popeye's! LOL
