The Pattern

To draft your pattern, you will need:

• A yardstick or long ruler
• A protractor
• A large compass, such as a yardstick compass or retractible compass.
• Pattern paper, such as newsprint

Instructions:

1. Draw a line down one side of your pattern paper.  This line will be .  The top of the line will be the center of your circle.
2. Using a protractor, mark an angle degrees (a) from the centerline.  Draw a guideline long (b) from the center of the circle through this mark.
3. On the centerline, measure off (b) from the center of the circle.  Using your compass, draw an arc from the centerline out to the guideline.  This is the pattern waistline.  This line should be of your total skirt waist, or (c).
4. Mark above the waistline, and use your compass to draw the waist seam allowance (d).
5. Measure down from the waistline along the centerline, and mark that point (e).
6. Extend your guideline from step two below the waistline (e).
7. Use your compass to draw an arc between the mark in step 5 and the line in step 6.  This is your hem line (f).  Double-check to make sure that your centerline and side seam lines are of equal length.
8. Measure below the hem line and use your compass to draw the hem seam allowance (g).
9. Add your side seam allowance to one side of the pattern (h).  The centerline will be placed along the fold.
10. Cut out your pattern!
